If we want to have a wonderful and challenging activity with kids, try to do gardening. So, what can they do in gardening? They can get involve in whole process of planning out, planting it, watering and harvesting it. They will look very happy whenever seeing something begin to grow what they planted. It is really amazing for them. Just see.
Why is gardening so wonderful and challenging activity for kids though it does not offer the instant rewards for them? Yes, because it can help them to learn patience and the importance of taking care of things over a period of time and it will be useful things for their life.
So what kinds of plants should we grow when gardening with kids? Try to plant some flowers, vegetables or and herbs. Choose something that they particularly like to eat, as cucumber or tomatoes. It is good to be considered to plant different things at different times.
If this activity be done with small children, it is enough using small media something like a tray of seeds in the house or a container in the yard. You will see they will rush to it every day to make sure if something has appeared. All activities as counting leaves and flowers, measuring the growing plant will make them happy too.
Avoid poisonous plants if this activity involves very young children by check all the plants that you are thinking of using. For you know that tomato and potato leaves are toxic. Actually it is not big problem if we work with older children. They will understand when we warn them about that. After all, they will know poisonous plants in nature and most of we parents would agree that it is better for them to be knowledgeable than ignorant.
The gardening also offers an opportunity in a very natural setting to talk to kids about difficult subjects including death and reproduction. We can tell them the happy eve whenever the seed we plant can grow well while some of them can not. The grown plants will give fruits and then will die off at the end of the season. This can be a gentle first lesson for them in the sad fact of life that even what we love most can die.
If you have no interest in gardening yourself, it may be better not to fake it. Kids can usually tell and their own enthusiasm will quickly die. Instead, consider asking your parents or in-laws to take on this activity with them, if they are keen gardeners. Older people often love to grow things too and gardening with kids can create a wonderful bond between grandparents and their grandkids.
